Barbie Ithungo Kyagulanyi, the wife to Presidential candidate Kyagulanyi Ssentamu Robert aka Bobi Wine, has arrived at the Iganga Chief Magistrate’s Court for his case mentioning. Barbie was on Wednesday and Thursday this week denied access to her husband who remains in incarcerated at Nalufenya prison.
It remains unclear whether Kyagulanyi will be virtually or physically appearing in court. However, reports say Hon. Kyagulanyi on Thursday declined to sign police bond papers citing time wastage as the state would decide when he would end his campaign trail to turn up for mention.
Up to now, it remains uncertain whether the presidential candidate will obtain bail and proceed with his campaigns or he is to remain on remand. Precedents have been set already for a Museveni challenger to campaign from behind bars. In 2006, the Forum for Democratic Change party candidate, Rtd. Col. Dr. Kizza Besigye spent most of the electoral period in Luzira maximum prison and the courtroom docks on charges engineered by the regime to frustrate his efforts to end Museveni’s tenure.
Museveni by then had a year prior (2005) scrapped presidential term limits which was his hinderance to his dream of life presidency. Several years later in 2017, he went on to scrap the age limit bill which barred people of advanced age beyond 75 from running for presidency.
